Bold colours, statement collars and patterns.
From clunky, platformed heels in extraordinary colours to intricate accessories both on clothes and as stand-alone pieces, Miu Miu is irrefutably renowned for bringing the world of fashion up to date in a playful adventure with colours and statement pieces.
One remembers being on set of a shoot at the beginning of the year and being presented with those slides with the pearls and thinking whilst fun, they’d never catch on. Now in AW17, it’s harder to think of a designer who hasn’t sought inspiration from either the over-sized pearl detailing or the fluffy slides.
This season’s trend appears to be all about the statement shoulder. Pointed shoulders, puff-sleeves, and oversized collars feature in Miu Miu’s latest season. The clothes are reminiscent of Archie’s Comics and 1950’s outfits with their elongated a-line skirts (which have accompanying puff-sleeve cardigans to match), glamorous dresses and Varsity-style jackets (even featuring a Varsity-jacket skirt). One sees a variety of faux-fur pastel jackets with enormous lapels as well as one particular see-through number with the collar in faux-fur again. Another particularly colourful outerwear garment draws attention to the upper body detail by having a contrasting, plain, beige lapel.
Aside from this season’s attention around the neckline, there is also an establishing of a trend for bold colours and patterns (mohair checks, stripes, plaid tweed and even animal prints!) in electric yellows, bright pinks and forest greens. We see a resurgence of the Varsity-style garments in bold yet traditional colour-ways such as burgundy and forest green with a modern twist of embellishments featuring the now signature Miu Miu pearl detailing.
One can also find slightly more subtle looks in the long sleeved, crepe de chine column dresses. The dresses come either as monochromatic pieces with detailing around the neck or as patterned pieces in pastel shades.
In short – Miu Miu AW17 is all about pastels, patterns and shoulders!
